Gorgram Union, Nilphamari Sadar Upazila.
Nilsagar, located in Dhopadanga of Gorgram Union, can be reached from Nilphamari by road via bus or auto-rickshaw (easy bike).
Located 14.5 kilometers northwest of Nilphamari district town, Nilsagar Dighi is situated in Dhopadanga Mouza under Gorgram Union of the Sadar Upazila. The total area covers 53.90 acres, with the main reservoir spanning 32.70 acres. It is believed that the excavation of the Dighi took place sometime during the 8th century.
According to Hindu scriptures, during the 8th to 9th centuries BCE, in the great Kurukshetra war, King Virata sided with the Pandavas, while King Bhagadatta supported the Kauravas. A game of dice took place between the Kauravas and the Pandavas, where, upon losing, the Pandavas were forced into a twelve-year exile in the forest. During their exile, the Pandavas chose to stay in the cowshed area of King Virata’s kingdom — which is believed to be present-day Gorgram.
To quench the thirst of the Pandavas, King Virata ordered the excavation of this massive reservoir. Over time, the original name 'Virat Dighi' evolved through local dialect into 'Birat Dighi,' then 'Bilta Dighi,' and finally became known as 'Binna Dighi.'
In 1979, the then Sub-Divisional Officer, Mr. A. Jabbar, initiated its renovation and named it 'Nilsagar,' aiming to develop it as a tourist destination. The water depth reaches up to 23 feet in the center (from June to October) and around 4 feet near the banks.
