Language and culture

The district has a population of approximately 1.6 million, and all of them speak Bengali. However, in the Syedpur Upazila, there is a population of about 120,000 non-Bengalis, primarily from Bihar, who speak Urdu alongside Bengali when communicating with one another. Additionally, around 0.25% of the population, consisting of indigenous and Harijan communities, speak their own languages, in addition to Bengali, within their communities.

People living in the rural areas of the Bengali community speak in a regional dialect known as the "Rangpur Regional Language." This regional language is beautifully expressed in the region's Bhawaiya songs. Family and social events, such as weddings, ceremonies, and the Nabanna festival, showcase the full expression of Bengali culture.
