Teesta Barrage is situated on the Teesta river at Doani in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat district, 1 kilometer away from the border of Dimla upazila of Nilphamari district. The construction of barrages in the Teesta river, in this region, the need for a irrigation project in the Gravity system is felt from the British period. In 1937, the then government took the plans of the Teesta Barrage Project. The original plan was adopted in 1953. The construction work of the Teesta Barrage Project was undertaken in 1979 and the construction work of the Kanan system was taken in 1984-85. Barrage length is 615 meters, gate 44. The Canal Head Regulator is 110 meters long, gate 8. Total gate 52. June 1, 1998 finished the first phase of the project. Total construction cost is 969.53 crore taka.

The work of the Teesta Barrage Irrigation Project started in government funding in 1984.

In 1985, construction of irrigated farmland and water works along with Teesta Barrage began to be constructed at the cost of Saudi Development Fund and the Islamic Development Bank and Abu Dhabi Development Fund of around Tk.2,500 crore.
